THE OLD MAN

I know few of you read the stories of Buddha. I will quickly summarize one of my favorites: the fable of the old man:

Summary:
Man's horse ran away. His neighbor came over to tell him how sad he was about the "bad" turn of events that made him lose his only horse.

The only many merely said "thank you for your concern, but do not fret for me, I do not feel the "badness" of the event, it was merely an event that occurred.

A week later the horse returned. It had found a herd of wild horses and they came to the property to graze. The neighbor came over to share his happiness at the "good" luck of gaining a herd of horses from an old and weak mare.

The old man merely said "thank you for your concern, but the return of his horse was merely an event and the "goodness" of the event was not a matter which he had the wisdom to define.

While trying to break one of the new horses the old man's only son was thrown and broke his leg. Yet again the neighbor shared his sadness that such bad result should come from the good luck of gaining the herd of horses

As before, the old man thanked the neighbor for his concern but said that his sons broken leg was an event over which he was not wise enough to call good or bad.

The next week the Chinese Army drove through and was forcibly taking young men to come and serve military service. Because of his son's broken leg they deemed him unfit for service and left him behind.

The neighbor came over and told the old man how relieved he was to hear that the old man's son had the good fortune not to be forced to join the military.

The old man simply replied he was grateful for the neighbors continued display of love and concern, but could not speak to the "goodness" or "badness" of the situation. Again he reminded the neighbor that the goodness or badness of an event fluctuated with time and beyond the wisdom of any man. The dilemma is that we can only speak to the moment or the past. He again told the neighbor of our inability to control or predict the flow of time left him and all men were incapable of assinging a moment in time as either good or bad.

The next day another event occurred. The neighbor came to share his opinion.

This leads us to 3 important questions:

1) Do we really need to know what that event was?
2) Are we convinced we have found a fountain of wisdom which gives us a knowledge of time which places us above the old man.
3) If so, why is that a good thing or a bad thing?

IT JUMPED INTO MY ARMS AND BEGAN TO LICK ME AND IT WHOLE BODY WAS SHAKING WITH THE FEELING OF BEING HELD AND LOVED. IT WAS SO SCARED AND I COULD TELL IT SUDDENLY FELT SO SAFE. I WAS ENVIOUS.

I WALKED AROUND AND FINALLY FOUND IT HAD GOTTEN AWAY FROM A FLOWER SHOP DOWN THE ROAD. THE WOMAN WAS SO HAPPY I FOUND HER. SHE JUMPED INTO HER ARMS.

I FEEL ANIMALS ARE OUR CHILDREN. EXCEPT FOR BEARS. I WATCH THE COLBERT REPORT. I HAVE BEEN ENLIGHTENED.

I ALSO THROW SHARKS INTO THE NON-BABY CATEGORY. I LOVE ALL ANIMALS THAT CONSIDER ME A FATHER. I DON'T TRUST THE ONES THAT CONSIDER ME FOOD. Presumably Jesus died. People spaced it off for 40 years. Nothing was written during the 40 year gap between the death of Christ and the first of the 4 books of the new testiment.

The only link in writing between the time of the death of Christ and the New Testiment was written by Saul (also called Paul and Salatarsis), who claimed to have seen a light that asked him why he was punishing the followers of Christ.

He converted and began to preach. When he discussed his knowledge of Christ he never once mentioned the virgin birth, Mary, Joseph, Jerusalem, miracles, raising people from the dead, curing the blind, the manger, the 3 kings, the star of Bethlehem and referrred to the other apostles as lazy and ignorant.

His 80,000 words are the only link we have between the death of Christ and the new testament. Yet the first Easter was celebrated on 2400 BC.

I AGREE: GOD IS A MATTER OF FAITH. HOWEVER, IT IS NOT TAUGHT AS A MATTER OF FAITH. IT IS TAUGHT AS A MATTER OF FAITH WITH A GUN TO YOUR HEAD.

APOLLO, ROBIN HOOD DEEMED MORE LIKELY
AS HISTORICAL FIGURES THAN MOSES OR JESUS

In the recent Wasr on Christmas hullabaloo, the question asked, “Is there nothing sacred anymore?” My answer: Yes, there is something sacred. Most sacred is our innate curiosity, our ability to reason, and a determination to know truth. Any attempt to hinder human thought processes is great sacrilege.

Last century a student of mythology, Lord Raglan studied all the myths and legends that influenced western civilization in his 1936 book entitled The Hero. His basic premise is that the mythical hero’s life is a remnant of ancient ritual drama enacted at the coronation of priest-kings.

According to Raglan, rituals involved specific acts performed for magical purposes. Ritual dramas required participants play specific roles. A quasi-boiler-plate plot always determined the character’s role. Eventually, myths of priest-kings outlived the ritual and became many myths and folktales from which we derive many legendary heroes such as Hercules, or Moses, or Robin Hood.

Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter continued this archetypal tradition of mythical characters. They affirm inherited patterns of thought derived from past collective experiences of humanity. Freud believed these archetypes to be present in our subconscious psyches. Thus, their popularity, as well as opposition from adherents of competing myths, continues today.

Raglan concludes there are at least twenty-two standard archetypal characteristics of this duplicated singular myth. The closer the legendary character fits these characteristics the less likely the hero is a historical personage. Historical persons dramatically differ from Raglan’s twenty-two characteristics are as follows:

1. He is born of a virgin mother.
2. His father is a King.
3. The father has a unique relationship with the mother.
4. The circumstances of the child’s conception are unusual, often humble.
5. He is reputed to be the son of a god.
6. There is an attempt to kill the child/god shortly after birth.
7. He is spirited away, escaping a premature death.
8. The child is raised by foster parents in a far country.
9. We are told virtually nothing of his childhood years.
10. On reaching manhood, usually at age 30, he commences his mission in life.
11. He successfully overcomes the most severe trials and tests.
12. He marries a princess.
13. He is acknowledged as a king.
14. He rules.
15. He prescribes laws.
16. He loses favor with the Gods or his subjects.
17. He is forcibly driven from authority.
18. He meets with a violent death.
19. His death occurs on the top of a hill.
20. His children, if any, do not succeed him.
21. His body is not buried conventionally.
22. He has one or more holy resting places.

Lord Ragan counted each hero’s archetypal event. Alexander the Great received the most points for a historical personage, seven. Here is how some people you might have heard of scored.

Following are some thoughts on Lord Raglan’s analysis:

A score of six or less qualifies one as a historical figure. This is not definite proof that the person existed, since most cartoon characters score low too.

A score of more than six indicates the hero does not represent a historical figure. This does not mean that the hero is totally fictitious. Rather it does indicate that many aspects of the hero’s life have been replaced by the archetypal fiction.

Some may ask why do humans seem compelled to revere their heroes as sacred. Humans need hero figures to compensate for their own disappointments, disillusionments, and lack of meaning in life. Some make heroes of Tiger Woods, George Bush, or Billy Graham. Others make heroes of Jesus, the prophet Muhammad, Buddha, Joseph Smith, or even Ron Hubbard (Church of Scientology).
